The Thing is a 1982 American science-fiction horror film written and directed by John Carpenter, and starring Kurt Russell as an American research team who become isolated in Antarctica and find themselves battling an alien life-form that assimilates other creatures. The visual effects for the film were created by Carlo Rambaldi, with whom Carpenter collaborated to flesh out Rambaldi's initial sketches. The Thing has garnered critical acclaim since its release. It is considered by some to be one of Carpenter's greatest films, but was not received well by critics on release in 1982. The film has acquired a cult following in later years, and today is often ranked among the best horror films ever made. The film's score was composed by Lalo Schifrin, who had previously scored several of Carpenter's films including "Assault on Precinct 13" (1976). Schifrin's music for "The Thing" has been widely available since it appeared on the film's soundtrack album.The Thing was released in North America by Warner Bros. Pictures on August 9, 1982, in a new print digitally restored from the original negative. It was previously released on VHS and laserdisc by Universal Studios Home Video in 1993 and 1999, respectively, but had never before been officially released on DVD until now. Warner Home Video initially announced a Blu-ray Disc release of "The Thing" at San Diego Comic-Con 2010. Numerous delays pushed the release date back to May 2011, with the box art published in April.
